(07-09-2007)

HA NOI — The Government and people of Viet Nam intend to strengthen friendship and multi-lateral co-operation with Finland, particularly in economy, trade and investment, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung told the new Finnish ambassador to Viet Nam, Pekka Hyvonen, yesterday.

PM Dung said he was satisfied with the fine development of the two countries in many fields and thanked the Finnish Government and people for their help in Viet Nam’s battle against poverty.

Dung asked Hyvonen to continue preparations with relevant Vietnamese organisations in good time for Finnish President Tarja Halonen’s visit to Viet Nam in February next year, adding he hoped the diplomat would act as a bridge between the two countries, promoting bilateral co-operation in politics, diplomacy, economy, national defence, culture, education and training.

Hyvonen congratulated Dung on his re-election as Prime Minister and expressed his honour to be Finland’s top diplomatic representative in Viet Nam.

He told the Vietnamese leader he was actively preparing for his country’s Presidential visit to Viet Nam, an event that would bring bilateral relations to a new height, especially in economy, trade and investment.

Hyvonen affirmed Finland’s continued provision of official development aid to remote areas in Viet Nam and co-operation in ship building and transport.

Yesterday, Finland gave Viet Nam 17 million euro (US$23 million) to help the country in its fight to eliminate hunger and alleviate poverty. — VNS
